As most of you probably know, the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World came out last week. Starring Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Windstead, the film is an adaption of the graphic novel series of the same name, written by Bryan Lee O’Malley. I haven’t had a chance to see it, but I’ve heard good things. Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie an 81%, and they aren’t easy to please. One critic on the site wrote, “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is endearingly relatable precisely because it celebrates the ordinary, focusing far more on the foibles and frailties of the players than on the invincible avatars of a game.”

In an effort to get with the times, I’ve started reading the Scott Pilgrim books. I’ve finished the first one (Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life), and I’m in the midst of reading the second (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World). The story begins with Scott Pilgrim, a 23-year-old Canadian slacker and bassist in the band “Sex Bob-omb.” Goof-off Scott coasts through life in his own “cool” way, mooching off  his sardonic gay roommate Wallace Wells and, at the beginning of the story, dating 17-year-old Chinese-Canadian Knives Chau. However, it’s not long before Scott meets rollerblading badass delivery girl Romona Flowers at a party. Desperate to get Ramona’s attention, Scott ignores a series of warnings from her first evil exboyfriend. Will Scott ever get Ramona’s attention? Will Ramona’s evil exboyfriend find him? What will happen to Knives? Will Wallace finally get a date? Prepare your mind to be blown and read Scott Pilgrim!

While I usually read violent/weird comics, I must admit, I’m enjoying Scott Pilgrim. The author doesn’t take himself or his books too seriously, adding a refreshingly nonchalant attitude to the novels. They’re a nice, easy read, and I don’t doubt I’ll finish the rest. We have copies of Scott Pilgrim vol. 1-6 at the store, some come take a look!
